Diovan HCT is a prescription medication that combines two active ingredients: valsartan (an angiotensin II receptor blocker, ARB) and hydrochlorothiazide (a thiazide diuretic).
Valsartan helps relax blood vessels to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow.
Hydrochlorothiazide helps reduce excess salt and fluid in the body, which helps lower blood pressure and prevent fluid retention. When salt is pulled from the bloodstream into the urine, water follows. This removes fluid from the body and creates more urine.
Diovan HCT is primarily used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). In some instances, this action may also be beneficial in the context of other conditions, like:
Diabetes
Heart failure, in combination with other therapies.
Chronic kidney disease (in some cases).
Brand name: Diovan HCT (generic name: valsartan / hydrochlorothiazide).

Dosage: The dosage of Diovan HCT varies based on the severity of the condition being treated.
Common dosages are:
Hypertension: The typical starting dose is 160/12.5 mg once daily. Depending on the patient's response, the dose may be increased to 320/25 mg per day.
Heart failure: Doses typically start lower and may be increased if needed, depending on the patient’s condition and response.
Kidney protection: In some cases, Diovan HCT may be prescribed for patients with kidney disease or diabetes. Low doses are often used initially. Blood pressure should be routinely monitored, and it’s important to report any symptoms like dizziness or light-headedness.
Administration:
Take Diovan HCT once daily, with or without food.
Consistency is important—take it at the same time every day to help remember.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for the next dose. Never take two doses at once.
Diovan HCT contains a diuretic, which can cause your body to produce more urine. Many individuals use this medication in the morning to avoid disruption of sleep due to the need to wake up to use the restroom.
Do not stop taking Diovan HCT suddenly without consulting your healthcare provider, as doing so may increase blood pressure or worsen heart failure symptoms.
Common Side Effects:
Dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when standing up quickly).
Fatigue or weakness.
Headache.
Cold or flu-like symptoms.
Increased urination (due to the diuretic effect of hydrochlorothiazide).
Cough (common with valsartan, though less frequent than with other ARBs or ACE inbibitors).
Serious Side Effects:
Severe allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing.
Decreased potassium levels (hypokalemia): Symptoms include irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, and fatigue.
Kidney problems: Decreased urine output, swelling in the feet or ankles, or unusual fatigue.
Severe hypotension (low blood pressure): Symptoms include fainting, dizziness, and lightheadedness. This can increase the risk of serious injury due to falls.
Liver problems: Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, and upper stomach pain.
Severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalances: Symptoms include dry mouth, thirst, and confusion.
Angioedema: A rare but serious side effect, presenting as swelling under the skin, especially around the eyes and lips.
Rare Side Effects:
Gout: Joint pain, redness, or swelling due to high uric acid levels.
Photosensitivity: Increased sensitivity to sunlight.
Elevated blood sugar or changes in cholesterol levels.
Can I take Diovan HCT with other medications?
Diovan HCT can interact with several medications, including other blood pressure medications, potassium supplements, lithium, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking Diovan HCT?
Alcohol can increase the blood pressure-lowering effects of Diovan HCT and may lead to dizziness or fainting. It’s advisable to limit alcohol intake while taking this medication.
How long does it take for Diovan HCT to start lowering my blood pressure?
The full effects of Diovan HCT on blood pressure may take 2–4 weeks to be fully apparent in blood pressure readings, though some people may notice improvements sooner. It’s important to continue taking the medication even if your blood pressure readings are consistently in a good range while using the medication.
Can I take Diovan HCT if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Diovan HCT should not be used during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, as it can harm the fetus. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding, as both valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide can pass into breast milk. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Will Diovan HCT cause weight gain?
Weight gain is not a common side effect of Diovan HCT. However, if you experience swelling in your legs, feet, or abdomen, this may be a sign of altered kidney or heart function contributing to fluid retention, which should be reported to your healthcare provider.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Diovan HCT?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
Can Diovan HCT be used for long-term treatment?
Yes, Diovan HCT is often used as a long-term treatment for high blood pressure, heart failure, and other conditions. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are important to monitor your condition and adjust the dose if necessary.
