Tavist (clemastine fumarate) is an antihistamine drug that reduces the natural effects of histamine in the body. When histamine becomes overactive, it can produce unwanted symptoms .like sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.
According to the FDA label provided by Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, “Clemastine Fumarate Tablets USP, 2.68mg are indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, pruritus, and lacrimation. Clemastine Fumarate Tablets USP, 2.68 mg are also indicated for the relief of mild, uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations of urticaria and angioedema.”
This means clemastine is used for:
Sneezing
Runny nose
Itchy, watery eyes
Swelling and itch associated with mild skin reactions
Tavist can cause drowsiness, which can be unsafe during activities like driving or operating machinery. Patients should be cautious and speak with a healthcare provider before using any antihistamine, including clemastine, if they have a history of:
Asthma
Hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid)
Cardiovascular disease
High blood pressure
Narrow-angle glaucoma
Stomach ulcer
An obstruction impacting stomach emptying
Enlarged prostate
Bladder neck obstruction
The safety and efficacy of clemastine fumarate have not been established in children under the age of 12 years.
There are no clinical trials that prove Tavist is safe (or likely to cause harm). Always discuss any new medications and over-the-counter products with your healthcare providers to review the potential risks and benefits of therapy during pregnancy.
Tavist and other antihistamine drugs have additive effects with alcohol and other CNS depressants (hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers, etc.). This can increase the risk of dizziness, falls, or difficulty breathing in some cases.
Those who are 60 years or older should use precaution. Antihistamines are more likely to cause dizziness, sedation, and low blood pressure in elderly patients.
Recommended doses are individualized based on initial needs and response to therapy.
The recommended starting dose is often 1.34 mg (one-half tablet) twice daily. Many individuals respond well to one-half to one 2.68 mg tablet, which can be dosed up to three times per day if needed. It’s recommended not to exceed three full tablets in 24 hours.
Common side effects of Tavist include:
Drowsiness
Dry mouth, nose, and throat
Dizziness
Decreased coordination
Nausea
Excitability or irritability (especially in children)
Upset stomach
Some symptoms or side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following conditions, contact your healthcare providerright away:
Difficulty urinating
Changes in vision
Fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat
Hives
Rash
Itching
Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Other common questions:
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is the most common alternative. In the case of a severe allergic reaction impacting breathing (anaphylaxis) an EpiPen (epinephrine) is recommended.
Each Tavist tablet for oral consumption contains 2.68mg of the active ingredient clemastine fumarate, USP. The tablet’s inactive ingredients include: colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, lactose monohydrate, povidone, pregelatinized starch and stearic acid.
