Can Spiriva Reduce Flare-ups In Asthma Patients?

Spiriva might be a good solution for asthmatics. The question is, how safe is it? In 2010, the drug Spiriva was used in a study for asthmatic patients, for a period of 14 weeks. The patients who were chosen had been unable to experience relief from inhaled steroids alone. This population of patients needed something that would make both their lung function and quality of life improved. Spiriva has provided that, historically, for patients with COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. So a study was launched to test this idea.

It began because doctors were prescribing high levels of steroids to asthmatics in order to help them cope. Traditionally, only patients with COPD, also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, were prescribed with Spiriva. It has shown a very high level of success in treatment at the long-term management of lung function. It is not, however, the best choice for long-term asthma. It has some serious issues and side-effects.

It works by smoothing the muscles of the lungs, which become constricted and continues to do this for the patient. This is why the study was potentially a good idea. The issue, though, is that the 14 week study was brief at best. The question is what would be the consequences over a long period of time. After all, it was first prescribed for the COPD issue when there is nothing left to do. Many people with COPD simply want some quality of life back. Spiriva does that. So could it be a good choice for severe asthma patients as well?

Only a doctor can decide this for each patient. The success level for asthma treatment should be one which offers the patient a quality life, without flare-ups. Here are some of the patients who cannot safely useSpiriva.

  • Patients that use anticholinergic medications, cannot safely use Spiriva.

  • Pregnant patients cannot safely use this medication.

  • Patients with urinary problems should not use Spiriva.

  • Any patient that is allergic to atropine, should stay away from its use.

  • Herbal medications should also be carefully evaluated prior to its use.
